She started working at the Dnipropetrovsk Historical Museum in 1973. In 1979, she graduated with honors from the history faculty of the Dnipropetrovsk National University and returned to the museum as a senior researcher in the funds department. In 1979 – 1989, she worked as a custodian of the united group “Orders, medals, numismatics, weapons”
In 1990, she participated in the organization and scientific processing of the materials of the museum of the Dnipropetrovsk National University. Since 1991 – custodian of the “Precious Metals” group. She took an active part in the organization and improvement of the accounting system of museum objects (she was one of the first to master the latest information technologies and began computer accounting of museum objects), in the development of perspective plans for the completion of the museum fund.
The result of her scientific work was fundamental articles, reviews, catalogs of the collection of precious metals DIM (Rublinsky treasure of silver, orders and medals of the 18th – 20th centuries, votums). A significant place in the scientific activity of N.O. Stepanenko is studying the collection of church antiquities in the collection of DIM.
